Why is night sleep important?

Night sleep is very important for the proper functioning of the body. The body regenerates itself during night sleep. All body systems, such as the brain, heart, gut, and liver, regenerate during night sleep. There are some hormones that are secreted by the body only during the night, such as melatonin and some growth hormones.

Which systems get affected due to lack of sleep at night?

The first and most important body system disturbed by the lack of night sleep is the BRAIN.

As the brain needs relaxation during night sleep. Secondly, the brain releases a hormone called melatonin in the hypothalamus. This hormone helps in the relaxation of the brain and plays the following roles in our body.

Anti- aging hormone: (melatonin)

ย Melatonin helps in anti-aging and helps in the regeneration of skin. That is the reason; people who complete their night’s sleep have very fresh skin. This is because the hormone melatonin is secreted during nighttime sleep and regenerates the skin. Moreover, people with poor night sleep have dull skin.

Memory issues: Why is night sleep important for your health?

The part of the brain called the hippocampus, which plays an important role in memory formation, recalling memories, and organizing ideas, converts short-term memory into long-term memory. In case of disturbed sleep, the hippocampus will start shrinking, which further leads to many other issues related to memory. So, night sleep is very important in keeping the functions of the brain parts normal and active.

Thatโ€™s why this is the reason people who do not sleep well at night have poor memory and other issues, such as irritability, headaches, and agitation. This is all due to insufficient secretion of melatonin.

Stress and depression: Why is night sleep important for your health?

Stress is another major health problem associated with a lack of proper sleep. Lack of proper sleep makes the body constantly alert, which leads to an increase in the level of stress hormone called cortisol.

This cortisol accelerates increase heart rate, agitation, and affects other systems such as muscles and joint fatigue and tension. Moreover, all these factors collectively have an effect on brain functioning, such as forgetfulness, Irritability, lack of concentration, etc.

However, a proper night’s sleep stabilizes all these hyperactive changes in the body, which may further result in calmness, relieve stress, and enhance concentration and memory. So, a quality night’s sleep is essential for a person to relieve stress and depression.

Adrenal glands: Why is night sleep important for your health?

Adrenal glands are glands above the kidneys. The function of these glands is to regulate the sleep cycle, and in case of lack of sleep, these adrenal glands come under stress and continue to secrete stress hormones called cortisol.

The cortisol, when secreted in high amounts,s can affect negatively, such as agitation, irritability, disturbed sleep cycle, and stress. So, it is essential to have proper sleep to keep the adrenal glands under control and functioning properly.

Liver: ย Why is night sleep important for your health?

Another major organ of the human body, the liver, gets affected due to lack of sleep. The main function of the liver is the detoxification of harmful substances and chemicals in the body.

Moreover, the liver performs this function during periods of rest, such as sleep. And depend upon the bodyโ€™s sleep-wake cycle, called the circadian cycle.

In case of lack of proper sleep, the liver also comes under stress and becomes unable to perform its function properly. This leads to altered liver functions, which further leads to deranged liver enzymes, impaired detoxification of chemicals,s and fatty liver. So, quality sleep is crucial for the liver to work effectively and efficiently.

Stomach: Why is night sleep important for your health?

Another important system is the digestive system, which gets disturbed due to a lack of proper sleep. There is a communication between the brain and the gut (the gut-brain axis).

However, in the case of disturbed sleep, the communication between the gut and the brain gets disturbed. This disturbance leads to increased hormonal levels, such as cortisol, and causes inflammation of the linings of the stomach.

What are the symptoms of disturbed gut-brain communication?

The following are the symptoms due to disturbed gut and brain health;

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Feelingย  of hunger
  • Feeling of bloating
  • Gastric reflex
  • Feeling of indigestion
  • Stomachache

  • Increase intestinal permeability: this leads to the entrance of toxins into the bloodstream, leading to infection and inflammation. So, proper sleep makes the gut stronger.

So, quality sleep keeps the gut and brain well-connected to each other and reduces symptoms of poor gut health. health

Skin:

ย Another major system of the body is the skin. The function of skin is to regulate toxins gives protection to the body from the environment. It is necessary to take proper care of the skin. The care of skin includes proper diet, exercise, hydration, and, most importantly, proper sleep.

Moreover, the skin regenerates during the resting phase of the body, which is sleep. A proper 7-8 hours of sleep gives skin a fair complexion and hydration. On the other hand, lack of sleep hurts the skin.
