Poor gut health is a major issue in recent eras. Gut health is an important component of human health; if it becomes disturbed for any reason, whole-body systems are affected.

Gut health is essential for both physical and mental growth. The foods we eat go through our gut and get absorbed into the blood and then into whole body cells. In case of poor gut health whole developmental process is slowed down.

Signs and Symptoms:

The following are the symptoms of poor gut health.

Stomach Pain:

The patient feels pain in the stomach, especially after eating. Stomach pain decreases oral intake, which impacts physical health and growth as well.

Sluggish Bowel Movement: The movement of the bowel slows down, which results in delayed digestion of food and nutrients.

Bloating:

Bloating is a feeling that the tummy is full of gas. The main cause of bloating is constipation, but it may be due to any other gynecological issues, especially issues with the ovaries and the uterus.

If the bloating remains for a longer period, with other symptoms, such as weight loss, decreased appetite, and feeling weak, it can be a serious issue related to ovarian cancer or any other cancers related to gastrointestinal cancers.

Acidity:

People always complain of a burning sensation in the stomach and esophagus. This is due to the oversecretion of stomach acid, hydrochloric acid, and other stomach secretions. These acidic juices irritate the stomach walls.

Diarrhea:

Having loose stools frequently is one of the symptoms of poor gut health. More frequent diarrhea leads to malabsorption of nutrients, which further leads to developmental issues.

Constipation:

Constipation is a sign of poor gut health, which further leads to many other gut issues, such as gas, bloating, headaches, abdominal pain, and fullness. Severe constipation leads to polyps and hemorrhoids.

Sleep problems:

People with poor gut health have poor sleep in general. This may be due to bloating, abdominal pain, or frequent visits to the washroom.

Feeling of nausea and vomiting:

The patient will feel nausea and sometimes vomiting, with severe constipation, and burning and pain due to increased production of stomach juices. Some people induce vomiting to get relief from pain and discomfort.

Anxiety/Depression:

Poor gut health leads a person to a low mood and depression, or anxiety, and vice versa. Sometimes it is due to decreased absorption of some important vitamins necessary for body functioning.

Dehydrated skin:

Poor gut health leads to dehydration due to low intake. Moreover, it may be due to frequent diarrheal episodes and less absorption of water by the gut.

What are the causes of poor gut health?

Poor gut health may be due to several different reasons. Such as,

Lower water intake:

As water helps in the metabolism and transportation of nutrients in the human body, when water mixes with the food, it enhances the digestion of food and its absorption. In case of low water intake, the digestion of food slows down.

Low fiber intake:

Lower fiber portions in meals can lead to constipation. Fibers help in the movement of stool in the gut. If the amount of fiber becomes less in the food content, it leads to harder stool and leads to constipation.

Heavy consumption of sugars:

People using more sugar, especially polysaccharides, suffer from bloating and diarrhea. This is due to the fact that most of the polysaccharides are not digested in the small intestine.

They are passed into the large intestines, where they are fermented by gut bacteria, resulting in more production of gas. However, sugar intake should be limited in the diet to prevent gut health from bad bacteria.

Anxiety and depression:

There is a strong relationship/connection between gut health and the brain. People with anxiety disorders experience more gastrointestinal issues, such as heartburn, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.

Similarly, people with depression have a constipation issue due to a slow response from the brain.

Lack of physical exercise:

Lack of physical exercise leads to indigestion, bloating, and constipation. Physical exercise improves digestion and mental relaxation, which again have a positive impact on gut health.

Gut Diseases:

Some intra-abdominal diseases, such as irritable bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, and some kinds of cancers, disturb gut health by causing hard stools or loose stools.

Poor Sleep:

Research shows that People with poor sleep have poor gut health. It might be due to hormonal changes due to sleep deprivation or maybe due to oversleeping. In case of oversleeping, a person becomes dehydrated due to low intake of fluids.

Use of Medication:

The use of medications, especially antibiotics, disturbs the normal gut flora and causes diarrhea or sometimes constipation.

How to Improve Your Gut Health?

Gut health could be improved by following these steps.

Manage stress and anxiety levels:

Managing stress or anxiety improves gut health. People with severe gut inflammation or gastritis related to stress are well managed through anti-anxiety medications.

High-fiber diet:

Use a high-fiber diet in your meals. A diet containing high fiber prevents constipation by increasing gut motility. food which are high in fiber are vegetables and fruits. So, vegetables and fruits should be added to daily meals to keep the gut healthy and prevent constipation.

On the other hand, if a person has loose stools high fiber diet should be avoided, as it further deteriorates the condition and increases gut motility.

Drink plenty of water:

Drinking more and more water helps in preventing constipation and keeps the gut healthy. It also keeps the gut clean by expelling feces.

Avoid Medications:

Avoid or limit your medication list, especially antibiotics, to keep your normal flora in your gut. Antibiotics kill and shed normal flora in the gut, which causes other opportunistic infections.

People on chemotherapy are also at risk for disturbed gut health. Constipation or diarrhea is the main side effect of chemotherapy.

Moreover, gut health mostly depends upon external factors such as food, stress, use of medications, poor lifestyle, and living standards.

Gut health should be properly assessed by a healthcare professional as it links to too many other factors. In a recentarticle June 2025, the importance of the microbiome is discussed in detail.
