What is a menstrual cycle?

Easy ways to relieve period cramps are very effective in managing period pain. The menstrual cycle is a cycle in which a woman’s body, during her reproductive years, prepares for pregnancy. If the pregnancy is not conceived, the uterine wall starts shedding, this result into bleeding. It is called menstruation, or in simple words, a period.

Why do cramps occur during periods?

When the thickened wall of the uterus sheds its walls, the muscular contractions occur to expel the material from the uterus.

The contractions that occur in the uterine walls are due to the release of a chemical called prostaglandins, this resulted in shutting down oxygen to the uterus wall and creates pain and cramps.

Furthermore, the severity of bleeding and cramping varies from person to person. Some women go through the cycle smoothly, while others feel too much pain and bleeding.

Which factors influence the pain and bleeding?

The following factors influence the pain during the active phase of periods:

  • Having spicy food
  • Drinking cold drinks or water
  • Low platelet count during chemotherapy treatment
  • Having a bath with cool water
  • Cold weather causes vasoconstriction of the vessels
  • Chronic stress and anxiety can intensify the pain
  • Dehydration: when there is less water in the body, the bloodbecomese thick in nature, which causes pain
  • Some underlying diseases,s such as uterine fibroid, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease,ase etc., increase the risk of pain.
  • Poor nutrition
  • Being younger than 30
  • Never being pregnant
  • Family history of severe pain

During periods, there should be special care, and some activities should be avoided as follows:

  • Avoid cold baths and do not go out in cold weather
  • Avoid taking painkillers
  • Avoid caffeinated ddrinks which can increase pain intensity.

Food plays a vital role during periods. Women who experience heavy bleeding should take proper iron-rich food and supplements to replace the blood loss. Food rich in iron is green leafy vegetables such as spinach, beans, and cereals. Simple non-spicy hot soup is recommended, which contains proteins and fluids.

Can period pain be managed with home remedies?

Yes, some home remedies are very effective in managing period pain; however, the time of intervention and use of the remedy matters. Most of the remedies before the period are very effective, and some of the remedies work during the active phase.

Consuming spicy food can cause gastrointestinal burning and worsen some medical conditions,s such as ulcers. ย Taking lots of rest is needed during period cycle. Your body needs rest at this time because it is going through a stressful time due to pain, bleeding, and hormonal changes. All these changes in the body lead to fatigue and emotional distress. So,o taking proper rest in this phase may heal the body and relax your mind and body.

Your body undergoes dehydration during menstruation/ period. i This happensdue to blood loss and sometimes due to low oral intake due to nausea and low intake due to mood swings. Keeping your body well hydrated helps in replacing the fluid lost during bleeding.

Furthermore, drinking fluids in the form of milk, water, or juices can boost your energy levels and help you feel active and energetic to carry out your daily activities.

Keep the pelvic area warm by applying a hot pad or a warm water bottle, which helps in relieving pain and easily passing out clots and blood expelled through the vaginal canal.

Try to manage period pain with home remedies and avoid painkillers as much as you can. Painkillers have so many other side effects besides relieving pain, such as nausea and voddrowsinessand can decrease blood flow. This further alters the bodyโ€™s proper mechanism.
